Figs Marinated in Port and Balsamic

Posted by Diana van Eyk on May 6th, 2011

I love figs, but bought some recently that were quite dry, and thought about what it might be like to marinate them.  This recipe from the Twin Tables site looks pretty appealing.  Here’s a quote describing their marinated figs:

Savory and sweet at the same time, the sticky, sweet deliciousness of these figs is intoxicating. As you bite in you get all the goodness of figs enveloped in rich syrup of sweet wine tinged with the sharp balsamic. It took one bite to have us scampering for more. We couldn’t decide if they belonged on our appetizer or dessert plate.

Ingredients

  • 2 C. dried figs
  • 1 1/2 C. port wine
  • 3/4 C. balsamic vinegar
  • 1/4 tsp. black pepper
  • pinch of salt
Combine all ingredients in a small sauce pan. Bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer 15 minutes or until figs are soft and sauce is a thick syrup. Serve warm or at room temperature.
